In this week's macro photography tutorial, I show how I flash lighting, natural light and slow shutter speeds to capture close up images inside an incredible once-abandoned research ship. Along with the settings and compositions I use, I show my tips and tricks for macro photography, blending flash light with natural light to create dramatic images that capture the story of the ship.
While I went inside looking mostly for macro photos, I took a wider range of images, including shots that show full rooms and of course some wide shots of the ship itself. All of these types of photos really help add to that story.
I took my images on board the SS Explorer, a research vessel launched in 1955 and used primarily in Northern waters before being retired in the 1980s and eventually coming to rest in Leith docks. I'm incredibly grateful to the SS Explorer Preservation Society for allowing me access to the ship and you can find more information on the ship in the links below, along with a page for donations.
