On August 17, 1999, the earthquake in Gölcük showed us how unprepared we were as a country for this disaster. In the intervening 23 years, it has been repeated frequently by experts that a similar earthquake is expected in Istanbul. Many studies suggest that the North Anatolian Fault line running through the Sea of Marmara will cause an earthquake in the 2030s at the latest. This earthquake has long been known in the press as the Great Istanbul Earthquake, but Turkey's busy agenda has been enough to make us forget its existence.
