In a huge setback to Africans and other nationals aspiring to migrate to the United Kingdom for better job prospects, The UK government on Monday, December 4th, 2023, unveiled a tough new set of measures aimed at lowering the country's ever-rising immigration numbers. The new five-point plan to cut immigration comes as Home Secretary James Cleverly has come under intense pressure to demonstrate he is taking a hard line on immigration since becoming Home Secretary just three weeks ago. It also comes as Conservatives are increasingly outraged by the latest legal stymieing of the Rwanda deportation scheme, as well as net migration reaching 745,000 last year. Conservative MPs have since piled pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his government to bring down net migration, which is the difference between those entering and leaving the UK. Mr Sunak and the Conservatives face a major political problem as a result of the dramatic spike, as they have repeatedly promised to curb net migration since taking power in 2010, and to "regain control" of the UK's borders since the Brexit vote.
Consequently, according to Mr Cleverly, the new five-point plan is "more robust" than any previous government's disposition towards migration. It includes measures on health and care visas, skilled worker visas, family visas, the shortage occupation list, and student visas. Under these tighter visa rules, overseas care workers will not be able to bring family dependants, to end the "abuse of the health and care visa," and Care providers who wish to sponsor persons for visa applications must be regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Also, there is a notable skilled worker visa minimum salary change: The income threshold for a skilled worker visa application will rise by nearly 50% from £26,200 to £38,700. Similarly, the Minimum income requirement for a family visa will rise from the 2012 rate of £18,600 to £38,700 to "ensure people only bring dependants whom they can financially support." Furthermore, the UK government will ask the Migration Advisory Committee to review the graduate route for student visas "To prevent abuse and protect the integrity and quality of UK higher education." Finally, the Government intends to "scrap low-wage shortage labour from overseas" by changing the way people working in understaffed industries can seek to work in the UK.
