Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804 – 1857) had three piano lessons from John Field, the Irish composer of nocturnes. Glinka's own "Nocturne in E-flat Major" was composed in 1828, although it was not published until fifty years later in 1878, over twenty years after the composer’s death. It is sometimes described as "the first Russian nocturne".
