Keskellä taistelua Ruotsin kruunusta kuningas Albrekt Mecklenburgilainen perusti meriveljeskunnan häiritsemään tanskalaisen Margareeta I:n laivoja. Kaapparikirjojen turvin he alkoivat tuhotoiminnan, siis merirosvouksen. Heidät tultiin tuntemaan Vitaaliveljinä. Vitaaliveljet herättivät kauhua ja pelkoa hallitsessaan meriä, Gotlantia, sekä Pohjanlahden linnakkeita. Huipussaan merirosvous oli 1300-luvun lopulla mutta toiminta jatkoi vielä pitkälle 1400-luvulle.
