Here are some tips to help you get your cooling system back on track.
Flush your radiator
If your radiator is bad, consider replacing it with a brass or copper radiator. Aluminum Radiators are commonly poorly made and offer worse cooling then the previously mentioned style. Aluminum radiators are also subject to break town due to a higher chance of electrolysis. Which is very common with flatheads. Right now the best radiators on the market come from Brassworks.
Always use thermostats. If you are one of those macho men that think you don't need them also consider using a large washer to reduce the waters speed. It is also common to drill a bypass hole in the thermostat. That works well too. All year flatheads can take a thermostat. Even the gen 1 1932-1936 Flatty's. The most common stat for aluminum heads is the Stant #15716
Water pumps should also be inspected while the cooling system is open. The pump shouldn't have corrosion in it. It should not have a loose pulley, meaning one that can be rocked side to side.
If this is your first time removing the pump remember there is a bolt inside the pump water neck. This is a common reason people can't get them off. also it should be said that the pumps are commonly your engine mount. So remember to lift and secure the engine before trying to remove the pump.
