Freak On A Leash" and "Master Of Puppets" are two of the most popular songs in metal, and if you take a look at the lyrics it's possible they are the SAME STORY told from two different perspectives. Let's take a look:
Master Of Puppets tells the story of an evil puppet monster who is controlling his prey and forcing it to self-sabotage. This individual has no control over the puppet master's destruction. When we think about mental health- addiction is a great example of a puppet master. It feels like addiction is always in the driver's seat, making choices that cause pain and misery, and it feels like there is nothing the "puppet" can do about it.
Freak On A Leash tells the story of someone who feels controlled by something outside of themselves. The individual in the story feels like they are trapped and like "something takes a part of me". This is similar to the way someone who is actively struggling with addiction feels. Like addiction is the master- controlling their every move and continuing to take their life and freedom.
These songs seem to tell the same story from two different perspectives.
