two package units, Carrier and York, same building, no heat service calls.
it's 4 degrees out and this building was said to have 2 units not heating. I make the first unit operational and order a circuit board before switching roofs. I find the second unit running in heat mode with no issues at first glance. after resolving some typical maintenance issues and verifying the heat is operating properly, the laboratory space is still cold, but why? the building recently had make up air units installed to help with the severe negative pressure that had got worse over years of adding exhaust. funny all these smart scientific lab guys and gals just kept adding exhaust without considering the negative pressure they were increasing each time exhaust was added, until the air conditioning and heating units could no longer keep up with the load. the make up air units solved their building pressure issues by providing neutral make up air, in this case heated to 70 degrees. there was a discrepancy between the units sensor maintaining 70 degrees and my readings inside at the register of 60ish degrees. the small roof top unit could not overcome this space being pressurized with cool air, slight adjustments solved our problem. Master of the obvious, being aware of the building as a whole and how it operates will make you a better service technician.
