Great Central Railway | 50th Anniversary Gala | 17th / 18th June 2023
1973 - 2023 marks 50 years of the Great Central Railway being a preserved heritage railway to tourists!
The line currently runs between Loughborough Central, Quorn, Rothley and Leicester North, and in the next 50 years it will run from Leicester and Loughborough in Leicestershire to Rushcliffe Halt and Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, which will make the GCR 18 miles long. It also has an extension to the Mountsorrel Branch from Swithland Sidings to Nunckley Hill and Mountsorrel, which opened in October 2015.
The Great Central would not have survived without it's friendly volunteers who come and do it for fun and paid staff who run cafe's and dining trains etc, and the best part is, the GCR still has double track where trains can race pass each other at speed.
In this video, we travel from Derby to Loughborough Midland station for the GCR, then we train spot at Quorn & Woodhouse where we will see the one and (probably) only chance 50 wagon train the "Windcutter" to represent the GCR being in steam and diesel preservation for 50 years.
Then we travel in the observation coach from Loughborough to Leicester and back, look around Loughborough Central engine shed, watch a class 43 HST pass Derby station and a ride behind Standard 5 no. 73156 from Quorn to Loughborough.
