U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle faced grilling by a congressional hearing on Monday into her agency's failure to prevent the assassination attempt of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump earlier this month.
Cheatle admitted before the House of Representatives Oversight and Accountability Committee that the event was the “most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades.”
While being questioned about who signed off on the security plan for the rally, Cheatle told Republican Congressman Michael Cloud that it’s a “conjunction of personnel,” for which Cloud replied, “Whether it’s the FBI or Fauci… these multiple layers of accountability turn into layers of plausible deniability.”
Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace questioned how Cheatle’s opening statement was reported in the press hours before her appearance at the hearing on the assassination attempt against Trump. “I have no idea how my statement got out,” Cheatle said, with Mace replying “that’s bull***t.”
Republican Congressman Michael Waltz scolded Cheatle, pointing to a number of transparency failures — including a lack of press conferences held by the Secret Service, FBI or DOJ. Waltz told her “regardless of the failure, I would fire you just the way you’ve handled it since.” Waltz added “this is how misinformation flies" and that "I would hope you have the dignity… to resign.”
