The Open “E” Major chord is one of the most popular chords played on guitar, but did you know that there’s a position shifting trick for it?
In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to take the upper geometry of Open “E” chord and use this design to move along the fingerboard and create other chord harmonies in the 6th and 8th positions.
Once you can shift into the new chord positions they can be used to perform open-string progressions that work especially well for acoustic finger-style guitar.
There is no doubt that Open “E” Major chord is common. Some swear that not only is it one of the easiest chords to play on guitar, it functions to play popular music in several styles.
That argument should start however with a revelation of how easy it is to slide the upper notes of an “E” chord along the neck to create unique harmonies with a “I-IV-V” progression in the key of “E.”
There are plenty of acoustic song-writers who apply position shifting with open chords, and their sound is fantastic. That said, if building acoustic finger-picked riffs is your goal then you are going to love the sound created by position shifting the “E” Major chord.
Once training enters the equation you’ll find it easy to jump up the neck with the “E” shape. This is because you already have the muscle memory. After this, song-writing can become a vitally important part of this chord’s application.
