During the last years of the 19th century and the first of the 20th, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells competed as to which of the two would print the best work of science fiction. A rivalry that continues today, with fans of French, on the one hand, who highlight its pre-existence, and of English, on the other, for the character it gave to the genre. With the invaluable help of Jorge Luis Borges, in this report we try to elucidate which of the two can be considered the definitive “father” of one of the most popular and influential literary trends of our time.
